A 22-year-old inmate faces a Texas County indictment for allegedly assaulting an officer at the South Central Correctional Center at Licking.

In an indictment handed down by a grand jury, Brian Vance, 22, is charged with violence to a correctional department employee.

The charge stems from an April 16 altercation with a correction officer after he refused to allow himself to be placed on a restraint bench. According to a report, Vance struck the victim 14 times using his right arm and elbow. He later struck with his right arm before hitting him two times with his head, according to the report.

The officer repositioned himself as Vance struck the victim four more times with his right arm and elbow. According to court documents, the officer stopped the assault by using pepper spray.

Any injuries to the officer are not detailed.

According to prison records, Vance was originally convicted of first-degree arson and tampering with an airplane/motor vehicle.
