The Cabool Board of Aldermen voted July 21 to discontinue sending final notices on delinquent utility accounts.

“We send out over 100 final notices each month,” said Ron Scheets, city administrator. “Between the forms, envelopes and postage, it amounts to around $130-$150 per month.”

According to Scheets, the city is not required to send them out. The original utility bill that is sent out the last working day of each month contains all of the pertinent information relevant to penalties and non-payment disconnects, and the fees required to reconnect services in the event of a non-payment disconnect.

Issues with the post office were also mentioned among frustrations. The vote was unanimous.

ABOUT PAYMENTS

Utility bills are due on or before the 10th monthly. A late fee applies after the 10th, and non-payment disconnects are done at 10 a.m. on the 16th.

To have services restored after a non-payment disconnect, the bill must be paid in full, a non-payment fee of $10 per meter will be collected, and new utility deposits are required to be paid —  which will add to the deposits already on file for that customer.

Persons who haven’t received a bill can contact city hall at 417-962-3136 to obtain the balance.
