OK it’s HOT and WET. We get it. Missouri is getting its fair share of rain this summer but not as much as down south. I am from Texas and my heart goes out to the folks dealing with all the tragedy that comes along with the floods. Keep them in your hearts and minds!

In preparation for our move to the new library, this is a PRE announcement to the upcoming eventual announcement. We are starting to move books while the library is still open. Then at some point we will have to close the Houston branch for a few weeks. This is only temporary so we can do the move properly. Be thinking about one of our other wonderful branches you can use in the meantime.

Some great new nonfiction has hit the shelves: “Something to Remember Me By” and “Kiss Me Like A Stranger” by Gene Wilder; “A Walk in the Park” by Kevin Fedarko; “The Best Minds” by Jonathan Rosen; and “Spitfires” by Becky Aikman. KIDS: “When Dad Travels for Work and When Mom Travels for Work” by Kristopher James Goeden”

COLOR OUR WORLD summer reading continues and the kids are checking out some wonderful books and logging in their reading time to achieve that prize at the end for their hard work. Part of the requirement this year is to turn in an art or photo project. Starting July 19, patrons can go into their local branch and vote on their favorite. Summer Reading runs until July 24, and the events are held each Thursday at all branches. Check out our website for what is happening at your local branch. Thank you so much to all the parents and kids that are participating. My biggest thank you to the donors who help make summer reading possible.

If you are in the mood for some fishing this summer, all library branches have fishing poles and tackle boxes that can be checked out courtesy of the Missouri Department of Conservation. Our Licking branch has some bird watching backpack kits for check out. For the kids, don’t forget to check out some of our activity kits.

The next adult book club meets Saturday, August 23. All are welcome and come prepared to discuss a recent book you have read.

Friends of the Library needs Friends! Ask how you can become a part of your local Texas County Library branch’s Friends Group. Friends of the Library strengthens libraries’ presence in communities and helps them thrive through fundraising, volunteering, advocating and so much more. The next meetings are as follows: 2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8 in Houston; 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 16 in Licking; 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19 in Cabool; and 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 in Summersville.
