On Tuesday, Nov. 4, voters in Texas County will consider two ballot measures that could affect the county’s roads, bridges and homeowners’ tax bills.
The first, known as the Road and Bridge Question, would replace an expiring county-wide half-percent capital improvements sales tax with a similar half-percent tax on retail sales, including utilities, dedicated to maintaining and improving the county’s transportation infrastructure. The current tax, approved by voters in 2005, helped finance the construction of the county Justice Center and is set to expire in March 2026.
Ballot language states that renewing the tax would provide a more stable funding source for townships to repair and replace aging roads, culverts and bridges. Estimates suggest the tax could generate roughly $1 million annually, and proponents note that pooled county resources may allow access to matching grants for infrastructure projects that individual townships cannot pursue alone. There are 17 townships in the county.
The second measure, the Homestead Tax Relief Question, would allow the county to exempt homeowners from increases in property tax liability on their primary residence.
Is the Homestead Tax Relief, same as Senior Tax Freeze voted on, passed?
I dont think it is. The senior freeze was approved earlier. So I guess this freezes everyone’s taxes. That doesn’t make sense
Don’t worry Jefferson City will change it again before anything happens and yes, it is the same as the freeze but now for everyone that own property, it’s hard for my office and assessor office to know what we are supposed to do. They need to update the circuit breaker. Call your Rep and senator let them know to leave things alone or come down and let us know what to do!
