A Houston couple and Houston High School student received awards earlier this week at the Missouri Community Betterment’s 61st conference in Jefferson City.
Delbert and Elaine Campbell were presented the “adult leadership” award during the annual event. HHS senior Ashley Gilbert was given the “youth leadership award.”
The Campbells have voluntarily led the “Reasons to Walk and Ride” program at Houston Elementary School since 2010 that emphasizes biking safety. Kindergarteners are presented with helmets, reflective bags and instructed around a safety course with the help of local law enforcement.
The program was initiated through the Safe Routes to School Grant and continued through Healthy Schools Healthy Communities and later the Community Betterment and Arts Council.
“Through the wisdom and guidance of Elaine and Delbert Campbell, we are confident over 3,000 students have been instructed in a fun, healthy activity and this lasting legacy will continue in the years to come,” Houston Community Betterment said in a news release.

Gilbert was honored for her role as president of Houston Community Betterment Y.O.U.T.H. She plays an integral role in hosting the annual Veterans Day Salute on campus and was praised for leading with integrity, empathy and vision.
“What truly sets Ashley apart is how she leads with purpose,” said Houston sponsor Crystal Ford. “She doesn’t step into leadership roles for title – it’s about making things better.”

I am so proud of my granddaughter she is a hard devoted young lady .
Thanks to you all for making our community a better place to live and work!
