Texas County’s two representatives to the Missouri General Assembly will return to work on Jan. 7.

That’s when both chambers reconvene for a new session. Texas County is represented by Rep. Bennie Cook, R-Houston, in the House. Sen. Brad Hudson’s district includes Texas County. He is a Cape Fair resident.

Here’s a look at what is expecting to be some of the key issues:

Taxation: Eliminating the state income tax remains a top goal for Gov. Mike Kehoe and legislative leaders, despite budget challenges.

Public Safety: Expect new proposals for public safety initiatives from the governor’s office.

Reproductive Rights: A potential 2026 constitutional amendment regarding abortion and gender-affirming care could dominate ballot discussions.

Childcare: Access to affordable childcare is another stated priority for the governor.
