A Houston man is charged with the assault of a woman during an altercation Sunday.

John James Carter, born in 1989, is charged with first-degree burglary, a felony; second-degree domestic assault, a felony; and violation of an order of protection, a misdemeanor. Bond is set at $10,000 cash only.

Houston police arrived to find a woman in distress and screaming for help.

An officer observed several areas of swelling, redness and a laceration on the left side of her cheek, eyebrow and eye.

According to a report, the victim believed the suspect was under the influence of alcohol and she attempted to remove him from the residence, but he continued punching her with closed fists, striking her four times. The victim reported a relative had attempted to video part of the crime, but he stole the telephone and ran out of the residence.

Carter, of the 400 block of North Grand Avenue, already had a court document banning him from the victim. Three witnesses said they saw the assault, including two children in the home.

Interviewed later, Carter denied kicking down a door to gain entry, and he said he was allowed to stay there.
