A Houston man is charged with child abuse or neglect and domestic assault following an investigation, authorities said.

Anthony D. Bigby Jr., born in 1985 and a resident in the 100 block of Sugar Maple Drive, is charged with child abuse (not sexual) and second-degree assault, both class D felonies. Bond is set at $10,000 cash or surety.

The 6-year-old girl was interviewed this week by school officials, a Houston Police Department resource officer and later by the Child Advocacy Center.

Authorities were alarmed when they discovered that the alleged victim had injuries to her mouth.

Bigby told an officer that the injuries were caused by a slap and denied an account that the child had been kicked in the face.

He is held in the Texas County Jail.
