The City of Houston will commemorate America’s 250th birthday with a distribution of 350 pink dogwood trees for property owners in the community.

The plan was outlined Monday during a meeting of the Houston City Council. The free trees will be 2-4 feet tall, and will be given to those registering at Houston City Hall. There is a limit of one per household.

Persons can call Justin Jones at city utilities at 417-967-3348 and give their name, address, telephone number and email address. Trees are expected to be delivered to the city by a nursery on March 10.

The city anticipates volunteers to assist those who might not be able to undertake the project. Tips for planting and care instructions also will be developed.

The project mirrors a Houston Garden Club project undertaken in the 1960s.

The council also will sponsor an expanded July 4 fireworks show staged from the Houston Memorial Airport. The Houston Area Chamber of Commerce will organize an Independence Day parade that afternoon.
