A Houston mother is charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, creating a substantial risk, authorities said.

Following up on a call on Thursday, a Houston police officer found two children in the home alone, ages 4 and 3. One of the children said Kico McCarthy, born in 1996 and a resident of the 200 block of East Main Street, was at the supermarket.

The officer found the home in disarray, with trash, dirty clothes and food scattered throughout. The interior temperature was 86 degrees.

The children were taken to the Houston Police Department and released to an employee of the Missouri Division of Family Services. According to a report, McCarthy arrived home and called police when the children were missing.

Bond is set at $1,500 cash only. Both charges are class D felonies.
