Members of the Houston City Council and city administration recently traveled to the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City to meet with state Rep. Bennie Cook and state Sen. Brad Hudson to discuss transportation funding and legislative issues affecting Houston and Texas County.
Attending from Houston were City Administrator Lloyd Wells, City Clerk Barbara Rodgers and council members Chelsye Scantlin (Ward 1), Fred Stottlemyre (Ward 1), Sheila Walker (Ward 2) and Don Romines (Ward 3).
A primary focus of the visit was transportation funding for the City of Houston’s bus system and the critical role it plays in serving senior citizens and individuals with disabilities. City officials emphasized that the service provides essential access to medical appointments, groceries, pharmacies and other daily needs for many residents.
“It was great to welcome our Houston city leaders to the Capitol,” Cook said. “The city bus system is more than transportation – it is a lifeline for many of our seniors and disabled residents. With this year’s state budget extremely tight, I will do everything I can and work with my colleagues in the House and Senate to try to find responsible solutions. While we cannot guarantee what funding will ultimately be available, we will continue advocating and do our best within the resources the state has.”
Hudson echoed the importance of dependable rural transportation while acknowledging the fiscal challenges facing the state.
“Reliable transportation plays an important role in helping Missourians maintain their independence and quality of life,” he said. “We are facing significant budget constraints this year, and final funding decisions are still being worked through. We will continue exploring options and working collaboratively, but outcomes will depend on available revenues and overall budget priorities.”
During the meeting, local and state officials discussed how pending legislative proposals and broader budget pressures may influence the long-term sustainability of Houston’s transportation program. Both legislators emphasized their commitment to working through the budget process carefully while prioritizing essential services where possible.
In addition to transportation funding, the group reviewed other legislation under consideration, including tax-related proposals and their potential impacts on local economies, school districts and municipal revenues in Houston and across Texas County. Leaders discussed the importance of balancing tax policy decisions with maintaining stable funding streams to support local government operations and public education.
Cook and Hudson reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining open communication with Houston’s city leadership and continuing to advocate for rural Missouri communities as budget negotiations move forward.
Cook, a Republican, represents Texas, Phelps and Maries Counties (District 143) in the Missouri House of Representatives. He was elected in November 2020. For more information, call Cook at 573-751-2264 or email Bennie.Cook@house.mo.gov.
