The Houston R-1 School District announced its 2025-26 teachers of the year on Thursday.

Instructional Math teacher Jessica Meier is the elementary teacher of the year, Social Studies teacher Micah Lee is the middle school teacher of the year and Welding instructor Adam Vandiver is the high school teacher of the year.

Dr. Justin Copley, superintendent, said recipients are selected through a process that includes peer-teacher nominations, teacher observation scores and a checklist of qualities such as positivity, enthusiasm, teamwork, collaboration and strong communication.

Creativity, engagement strengths of Meier

Meier was praised by the district for the dedication, passion, commitment and care she brings to her classroom. She was described as creative and excelling in helping students reach their full potential. She also plays an important role in the school community, the district said.

“Mrs. Meier consistently goes above and beyond to support both her students and her colleagues,” said Elementary Principal Jody Jarrett. “She is always looking for creative ways to facilitate learning and help students reach their full potential. Her dedication and genuine care for our school community makes her an invaluable part of the HES team.”

Lee wears multiple hats at HMS

Lee serves in multiple roles at the middle school, including the building leadership, motivation and curriculum team. She was also the high school girls’ basketball coach the past three seasons. The district described her classroom as fun, engaging and productive for students while promoting high expectations.

Lee was also the middle school’s teacher of the year in 2022-23.

“She loves Social Studies and her enthusiasm shows in her teaching,” said Middle School Principal Tracy Hughes. “She wears many hats for HMS. We appreciate everything she does.”

Vandiver built program ‘from the ground up’

Described as the foundation and driving force of the welding program, Vandiver created the vision for and built what the district said is a ‘highly respected and sought-after program that consistently produces workforce-ready graduates.’ Many of his students have earned top honors and awards in competitions.

Vandiver, who coaches the high school golf team, is a member of the high school building leadership team as well.

“He built this program with intentionality, structure and excellence,” said High School Principal Amanda Munson. “More than an instructor, he is a mentor, leader, collaborator and builder of futures. His commitment to excellence, student success, teamwork and continuous improvement makes him exceptionally deserving of teacher of the year.”
