A Cabool man is charged with vehicle theft after allegedly taking it along with a cellphone and credit and debit cards.

Jesse L. Boyd, who lives on Stave Mill Road and was born in 1980, was located Sunday by the Clinton Police Department at a hotel. Boyd said he traveled there to pick up his girlfriend at the jail and planned to go to Iowa.

Boyd is charged with first-degree tampering with a vehicle, a class D felony. Bond is set at $10,000 cash.

The victim said he noticed Friday, April 3, that his black 2015 Chevrolet truck was missing. As he searched his house, he found his identification, credit and debit cards, a cellphone and a .22-caliber Mossberg bolt-action long rifle were gone. A farewell note was left behind for the victim, Boyd’s roommate.

According to a police report, Boyd used the stolen cellphone to leave a message on the victim’s answering machine and asked him to drop any charges. He promised he’d return in a couple of days.

Boyd told Clinton officers that the victim is senile and didn’t realize Boyd had purchased the truck.
