The Houston softball team will be favored to win the program’s fifth district championship.

The Lady Tigers unanimously received the top seed Tuesday in the upcoming Class 2 District 3 tournament. Games will be played May 7-13 at the Trojan Sports Complex in Potosi.

HHS (10-7) will face No. 8 Steelville/Viburnum at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 7, to begin district play. Other first-round games are: No. 4 Potosi vs. No. 5 Licking, 3 p.m.; No. 2 Salem vs. No. 7 Kingston, 4:30 p.m.; and No. 3 Bourbon vs. No. 6 Grandview, 6 p.m.

The semifinals are 4 and 5:30 p.m. on May 11. The championship game is 4 p.m. May 13.

Houston has won four district championships – three in a row from 2022, 2023 and 2024 under coach Jim Moore, who is now the head coach at Salem. If the seeds hold true, the Lady Tigers would face Moore with a district title on the line. The teams have played twice this year with Houston winning 5-3 and 9-8 in extra innings.

“Everyone knows what’s staring us in the face – playing Salem a third time,” first-year Houston softball coach Aaron Conaley said.

The Lady Tigers are 3-0 against district opponents with a pair of wins against Salem and a 19-9 victory over their first-round opponent, Steelville, on March 24. They are scheduled to play Licking on Friday and Bourbon on Monday.
