Tuesday was yet another big day for the Houston High School girls track and field team, as the Lady Tigers took third at the big annual SBU High School Bearcat Classic at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar.
Houston competed in the Class 1, 2 and 3 division in the event, which featured huge fields in each event. The HHS girls scored 52.33 points to place third among 63 squads while the boys didn’t score (the top-8 finishers in each event score team points).
The Lady Tigers came away with two event victories – the first since Houston began attending the meet years ago. Freshman Lyla Huffman won the 1,600-meter run, setting a school record in the process (breaking the old mark that has stood since 1995) and junior Adyson Dailing topped a field of 99 runners in the 200-meter dash. Huffman’s win was notable in that the runner-up was her nemesis from the cross country season last fall, Fair Grove junior Katrina Cantwell.
The Lady Tigers have set school records six times this season.

“The SBU Bearcat Classic is a fun meet and gives us the opportunity to see how we perform against some of the best small school athletes from the southwest part of the state,” said HHS head coach Mike Tottingham. “It’s a long day; our bus left at 6:30 a.m. and we didn’t get home until almost 10 at night. But it was definitely worth the effort looking at our results.”
Clever took first in the girls standings with 77 points, while Eldon was second at 70. Mountain Grove’s boys won the meet with 52.5 points, while Clever was second at 51.
