Houston Municipal Golf Course’s own Danny Backus marked his 66th birthday the only way he knows how — one hole at a time.

Every year, Backus shows up at HMGC with a simple plan: Play one hole for every year he’s been on this earth. No shortcuts, no substitutes — just Danny, the course and the game he loves.

This year, that meant 66 holes — all of them played solo, all of them completed in what can only be described as a one-man celebration of a life well lived.

What makes Danny’s tradition especially fitting is that this course is more than just a place he enjoys — it’s where he works. As a member of the HMGC staff, Danny spends his days helping others experience the game he’s so clearly devoted to. And once a year, he gets to experience it in a way that’s entirely his own.

Playing 66 holes in a single outing is no small feat. That’s nearly four full rounds of golf, requiring stamina, focus and a genuine love for the game — the kind of love that doesn’t fade with age, but deepens.

We’re proud to have Danny on our team and even prouder to watch a tradition like this grow right here at HMGC.

Here’s to 66 — and to many more holes ahead.
