One Houston Middle School track record was topped and another tied at last week’s meet in Salem.

Seventh grader Abby Casper set a new school mark by winning the 100 meters in 14.0 seconds. She eclipsed the previous mark of 14.19 set by Alicia Lybyer in 2006.

Skylur Malam, an eighth grader, tied the school mark with a high jump of 5 feet, 6 inches. He joined Scott Edington, who reached the same height in 1998.

The Houston girls, who were competing against five other schools in a seventh and eighth grade combined meet, had four first-place finishes. Along with Casper’s victory in the 100, Jaydin Ramsey was first in the 400 meters and Shelby Cremer placed first in the triple jump. The relay of Casper, Ramsey, Tori McCloud and Destinee Ullom won the 4×100.

The boys had three first-place finishes. Keegan Spurlin won both the shotput and discus to go along with Malam’s victory in the high jump.

Malam also finished second in the 400. Austin Schock was third in the high jump.

Two boys’ relay teams had second-place finishes. The team of Jordon Schmidt, Spurlin, Matt Knarr and Shock were runners-up in the 4×200. Malam, Weston Phipps, A.J. Hoover and Caleb Adkison were second in the 4×400.

The 4×100 relay of Knarr, Schock, Phipps and Adkison finished third.

For the girls, Casper also finished second in the 400 and third in the high jump. Alyssa Hayes was second in the high jump.

The 4×200 relay team of Cremer, Hayes, Krista Scott and Emily Shea finished second.
