The Texas County Memorial Hospital Healthcare Foundation has awarded $2,000 in scholarships to area students to assist with their educational costs for the 2010 fall school semester.

Paul Fockler of Houston and Kristen Terrill of Summersville were the recipients chosen by the foundation board of directors from several applications received.

Fockler, a 1988 graduate of Covenant Life Christian Academy in Houston, is enrolled at Missouri State University-West Plains, where he is pursuing an associate’s degree in nursing. Fockler plans to graduate in May 2012; he is attending school part-time.

He is also a sales associate at the Houston Wal-Mart Supercenter and lives with his wife, Melissa, in Houston.

Terrill, a 2009 graduate of Summersville High School, is also enrolled in the nursing program at MSU-West Plains. Terrill is also pursuing an associate’s degree in nursing. Terrill is a full-time student at MSU West Plains and anticipates graduating from the program in December 2011.

Terrill lives in Summersville and is a nursing assistant at Mountain View Healthcare.

“The TCMH Healthcare Foundation has identified educational scholarships as a way to promote healthcare education in Texas County,” said Jay Gentry, foundation director.

For the past four years, the foundation has held a golf tournament with educational scholarships as the specific focus of the tournament. From the funds raised at this tournament, the foundation gives two $1,000 scholarships each spring and fall.

“The foundation board of directors hopes that these scholarships will assist in attracting and retaining qualified residents to work in the local healthcare fields,” Gentry said.

The foundation intends to award two $1,000 scholarships before the spring school semester in 2011. Applications for the scholarships will be accepted beginning Nov. 1. The scholarships will be awarded in January 2011. The scholarship application is available online at www.tcmh.org.

The foundation scholarships are designated toward students pursuing education in the field of healthcare and residing in the TCMH service area, which encompasses all of Texas County and parts of surrounding counties.
