A Houston man is charged with several traffic offenses following an accident that left several pieces of his car scattered along Spruce Street.
Houston police said they found debris and a license plate near Walnut and Spruce streets Sunday morning and linked the vehicle to Billy Jack Hayes Jr., 18, 313 Skyview Terrace. The wreck, which caused the airbag to deploy, apparently occurred earlier that morning.
Police said Hayes continued to operate the 1992 Honda through town, later driving through an unincorporated area near Houston and wrecking again near Highway E and U.S. 63. The Missouri State Highway Patrol impounded the vehicle after finding it along the side of the road.
Hayes faces several charges, including: leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, operating a motor vehicle without a valid license and operating a vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner involving an accident. Police said Hayes apparently engaged an emergency brake, creating black marks on the Spruce Street pavement before striking a street sign, leaving it mangled. Hayes and a passenger were not injured.
In November, Hayes was charged with two counts of property damage after police said he walked through a Houston subdivision and tossed liquor bottles at a home and through a car’s windshield. A stealing charge was filed after it was determined the containers were swiped at Houston Wal-Mart Supercenter.
