The National Forensic League presented a second diamond award to a former speech and debate instructor at Houston.

Pete Stein, who now coaches at Jefferson City High School, attained 3,161 points earlier this spring. Coaches receive one-tenth of their student’s points. Coaches qualify for membership and advanced degrees according to the same schedule provided for students and must apply and pay a membership fee.

Stein said the performance of Houston students over the years he was at Houston was primarily responsible for the award.

On attaining 1,500 points, coaches are entitled to wear a diamond-set NFL key or pin; additional diamonds accrue at 3,000, 6,000, 10,000 and each 3,000 points thereafter. The minimum time for each diamond is five years as an NFL member coach.

Stein will receive recognition at the Lincoln Financial Group/NFL National Tournament. This year’s event is June 15-20 in Las Vegas. About 2,700 students and 1,500 coaches are expected.
