A 44-year-old St. Louis-area resident incarcerated at the South Central Correctional Center died Tuesday afternoon from injuries sustained in an apparent attack in the facility, authorities said.

Mark Cosby, 44, died at TCMH. Brian Hauswirth, public information officer for the Missouri Department of Corrections, said the circumstances of Cosby’s death are under investigation. Authorities classified the death as a homicide.

Cosby, who was held in the prison system since October 1994, was serving a 20-year sentence from Pemiscot County on charges of assaulting a law enforcement officer, as well as robbery and burglary in St. Charles County.

In August, the death of another inmate at the prison was determined to be murder. Pleasant Hurst, 48, died from injuries sustained in an attack.
