The Houston Lady Tigers volleyball team took the first steps toward a rebuilding year in 2007 at last week’s summer camp.

Coach Debbie James said the focus of the camp for her varsity team, which returns two starters, was skills. Janell Gentry, who was named camper of the week, and Kourtney Huffman are the lone returning starters from last year’s team that advanced one victory away from the final four.

James said 41 players attended the camp that was divided into five age divisions.

Shelbi Moore received the varsity digging and serving awards for the week. Gentry was named the best setter, and Sarah Pierce was the top hitter.

Samantha Jones was the J.V. camper of the week. Kaitlyn Kell received the digging and serving awards, Tory Burgess was the top setter, and Kelsi Adey was the best hitter.

Lauren Hoover was selected the 7th and 8th grade camper of the week. Haylee Kell was the top digger and setter, Sadie Ashworth was named best server, and Chelsea Hinton received the hitting award.

Lauren Brown received the digging and hitting awards as she was named the 5th and 6th grade camper of the week. Courtney Mutzebaugh was selected the best setter and server.

Taylor Feighery was the 4th grade and under camper of the week. Emily Shea received the digging and hustle awards, Chloe Hunninghake was given the setting award, and Abby Ice received the serving award.

James said tryouts for the varsity and JV teams will be from 8 until 11 a.m. Aug. 6-10 at Hirtt Gymnasium. Houston opens its season Aug. 28 against Licking.
