Franklin Perry Lay Sr., 71, eldest son of Oscar and Dora Frame Lay, was born Dec. 29, 1935. He died June 19, 2007, at Licking Park Manor.

Mr. Lay grew up in the Tyrone area, where he attended Tyrone Free Will Baptist Church with his parents. He received Christ as savior at age 14.

He attended one-room schools in the Grandview and Tyrone communities and Summersville High School.

He married Joann Mercer. They had four children. Helping him raise his children was his second wife, Linda Jobe.

During the ’80s, he married Jean Gustafson, who brought four children to the marriage.

Mr. Lay was an over-the-road truck driver for 30 years, driving for Rees, Clouse, Johnson, McKee and Stewart Trucking companies.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Priscilla Jones; stepson, Wesley Mercer; and an infant grandson.

Surviving are his children, Franklin Lay Jr., Mary Manier, Nelson Lay and Charlotte English; two brothers, Paul Lay and Doyle Lay; four sisters, Phyllis Decker, Louise Aldridge, Barbara Stevenson and Permelia Neal; seven stepchildren, eight grandchildren and 14 step-grandchildren.

Services were June 23 at the Evans Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Howell Burkhead officiating. Burial was in the Tyrone Cemetery.
