The Licking Police Department’s K9 unit, Loki, has died.

According to LPD Chief Pat Burton, on the evening of Aug. 8, Loki was discovered seizing in his kennel at his handler’s residence. The dog reportedly died a short time later.

Loki’s body was transported to the University of Missouri’s veterinary medical diagnostic laboratory where an autopsy was performed.  On Aug. 20, the LPD rreceived results from the autopsy, burton said. The cause of death was unsubstantiated, but believed to have been the result of overheating of the body caused from prolonged seizing.

“Our department and community lost a great asset and I am personally heartbroken, as are all the members of the department, with the loss of K9 Loki,” Burton said. “K9 Loki will be missed by all who knew him.”

Burton said there was no indication of foul play or mistreatment discovered in the investigation.
