A previous rendering of an eight-lane track proposed to the school district.

The Houston R-1 School District board of education decided to move forward with attempting to obtain resources for an eight-lane track during a meeting Wednesday, Oct. 9.

During the meeting, the future of the track and field project was discussed including the number of lanes, funding sources, track location and options for the field.

At this time, the district is exploring a variety of funding sources, said Superintendent Dr. Justin Copley. The district also discussed the potential of bonding the project if other funding sources are unobtainable.

“The Houston R-1 School District board of education is committed to moving forward with the track project and will continue to be diligent in the planning process,” said Copley.

Proposition Track and Field – a $3 million no levy increase bond issue – failed to get the necessary 57.14% of votes to pass in April. 54.84% of voters approved the measure.
