Houston High School’s third annual Powderpuff Football Game turned out to be a thriller.
The girls-only contest took place on Monday (Nov. 11) in Tiger Stadium, featuring a Black Team of seniors and sophomores and the Purple Team of juniors and freshmen The contest went into overtime tied at 12-all, but the Pink Team prevailed 15-12 when freshman Claire Benoist successfully kicked an 18-yard field goal, with the ball glancing off the left upright on its way to being good.
The score was knotted 6-6 at halftime after junior Gracyn McNiell had a touchdown run for the Purple Team and senior Lacey Cavaness (playing quarterback) ran for a TD for the Black squad.
In the second half, the Black Team went ahead on a touchdown pass from Cavaness to senior Morgan McKinney.
The Purple Team tied it as time expired on a touchdown run and leap into the end zone by McNiell.
In overtime, both teams had possessions without scoring. They then went to a “kick off” with each squad taking a shot at a field goal. Benoist went first and made hers. Sophomore Summer Seago then stepped up for the Black Team, and her kick sailed just wide right.
Purple’s head coach was junior DJ Riley. Black’s head coach was sophomore Kane Crawford.
The junior class is now 3-0 in the series.
The game is sponsored by the school’s H Club and donations to benefit the club were accepted instead of an official entry fee.
