Runners prepare to the start the annual Don Tottingham Memorial Run last year.

Area residents participated Saturday in the annual Don Tottingham Memorial Run – in honor of Houston’s mayor from 2011 to 2019.

The event is sponsored by the Community Betterment and Arts Council of Houston and Houston High School Community Betterment. All proceeds go toward a $500 HHS scholarship and the HHS Y.O.U.T.H. Pack a Punch Backpack program, which provides food items for designated student weekends. Participants heard before the start of the event that with current enrollment of 67 students it costs $325 weekly to fund it.

Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, many students receive the weekend meals. Crystal Ford is the high school sponsor.

Saturday’s event included a 5K run, a one-mile walk and a fun run. A meal also was available at the event’s base of operations, First Baptist Church.
