The Houston volleyball team’s first home match was another win.
The Lady Tigers downed Summersville 25-21, 25-21 last Tuesday inside Hiett Gymnasium for the team’s second straight victory.
Tara Stanton and Viviana Guerra had seven kills apiece for HHS (2-5). Janae Huff handed out nine assists and Melody Buse had 17 digs.
Buse added two aces. Stanton and Kennedy Campbell had two blocks apiece.
“I was so proud of the way we competed,” Houston coach Loran Richard son said. ” These girls are starting to gain confidence and realize that they can compete with any team out there.”
Houston took control early by scoring 11 of the match’s first 15 points. Stanton and Huff had kills during the spurt.
Summersville twice got within two points but never led in the opening set. It was 23-21 when Guerra put down a kill and the set ended with a Summersville hitting error.
HHS fell behind 5-1 in the second and trailed until late in the set. Behind 20-16, the Lady Tigers scored eight unanswered points to take control. Stanton put down a kill to start the rally, Campbell blocked a kill attempt at the net and Buse served an ace to end the 8-0 run.
After a Summersville point, Guerra tipped the ball over defenders at the net and onto the floor to seal the win.
JUNIOR VARSITY: Sara Purcell had two kills in the JV Lady Tigers’ 25-13, 25-17 home loss last Tuesday to Summersville.
Baylee Weaver and Ellie Lock had one kill apiece for the Houston JV.
