Flooding in West Plains Friday evening caused property damage, closed roads and one person drowned. (Missouri State Highway Patrol)

One person drowned Friday night as high water swept through West Plains, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

Cpl. C.P. Chatman said a vehicle driven by a 57-year-old man from O’Fallon was washed off a roadway. The location was at Howell Creek near Missouri Avenue.

At some point, the driver exited the vehicle and later drowned. Next of kin was notified.

The patrol was assisted by the Howell County Sheriff’s Department and the West Plains Fire Department.

The man’s name was not released because the patrol doesn’t identify persons in accidents for fear it might be used in scams, it says.
