Billy E. “Bill” Mayfield was born near Dawson, Mo., on Jan. 22, 1928, the seventh of 10 children born to Andrew J. and Margaret C. “Zady” (Hurt) Mayfield. He grew up and lived most of his life in the Mountain Grove area. He passed away on Aug. 17, 2018, at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 26 days at the Hartville Care Center in Hartville, Mo., with family by his side.
As a boy, Bill attended the Mountain Valley and other schools. In 1945, he served his country in the Army and was deployed to the Philippines.
Following his discharge from the Army, he met and married his true love, Eva (Mathis) Mayfield, in 1951. They were married 67 years and raised three children.
Bill spent most of his career as a mechanic with Honeycutt Chevrolet of Cabool, Mo. His favorite pastimes were fishing and hunting –– especially deer hunting –– as well as camping, flea markets and garage sales. He especially liked Hank Williams and a good Clint Eastwood movie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Louise Rouse, Betty (infant) and Ruthlane (infant); and four brothers, Ben, Wilbur, Lewis and Hobert Lee (child).
Bill is survived by his wife, Eva of the home; three children, Billie (Don) Jackson of Ohio, Blayne (Annetta) Mayfield of Oklahoma and Leesa (JP) Smith of Missouri; eight grandchildren, Christopher Jackson, Brian (Emahlea) Jackson, Tim Jackson, Matthew Jackson, Marcus (Erin) Mayfield, Brandon Mayfield, Brad (Linda) Mayfield and Dustin (Kellie) Smith; and six great-grandchildren, Connor Mayfield, Blake Mayfield, Iain Mayfield, Cadence Mayfield, Jace Mayfield and Skylar Smith. He also is survived by two brothers, Orland “Bud” Mayfield and Don Mayfield; and many other family, friends and his Mountain Valley Church family.
He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Services were 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018, at Mountain Valley Church with Edwin Carter officiating. Burial was in Mountain Valley Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Tim Jackson, Dustin Smith, Brad Mayfield, Chris Jackson, Brian Jackson, Marcus Mayfield, Matthew Jackson and Brandon Mayfield.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Bill’s name to Hospice Compassus of Mountain Grove, Mo.
