In 2000, the Gamma Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, International, an organization comprised of key women teachers, began to collect new board books to be given to preschoolers and babies at the Texas County Health Department.  Teachers are from Houston, Cabool, Ava, Willow Springs and Summersville.  Babies and preschoolers get to pick out a book when they come for WIC and health screenings;  hopefully equating happy thoughts when going through health procedures.

Since the inception of this program known at “Born to Read,” the members have collected over 4,000 books.  A sticker is placed on the back of the book indicating which books have been donated. Since the four meetings during the year is hosted by the various communities, each group brings books to their meeting.

On Sept. 13, Rep. Bennie Cook recognized the members by providing an appreciation plaque to the Texas County Health Department’s representative, Jen Russell. In addition, Louise Beasley, Texas County Library, provided a tour of the new library facilities.

A proclamation was presented Saturday by Rep.
