Texas County Presiding Commissioner Fred Stenger addressed the arrest of Texas County Sheriff James Sigman and the county’s future early Thursday afternoon.
“It’s with a heavy heart that the county commission is giving this statement on behalf of the county concerning the arrest of our sheriff, James Sigman,” Stenger said. “What we want to do is assure the citizens that law enforcement and the security of the county is not in jeopardy. We have been in contact with other agencies that have stated they would be more than happy to assist.
“Following the state statutes is a very convoluted and confusing procedure that we’re working our way through. We hope to have more information from the judicial system and the special prosecutor later this day and we’re following the advice, not only of the statutes, but of our special counsel out of St. Louis that has been hired for retainers for the last several years.
“Again, it’s unfortunate, but we do want the citizens to know that the county has not been abandoned as far as law enforcement is concerned and we’re taking steps to make the corrections and necessary adjustments as we speak.”
