Houston High School sophomore Elijah Jones was recently selected to join the prestigious Memphis Blues Drum Corps.

Jones, a mellophone player, was among several students from multiple states auditioning this month for a position with the Memphis-based group, which provides drum corps experiences for musicians ages 16-21.

Houston sophomore Eli Jones and the Memphis Blues play “Eternal Father” during their December camp.

“I’m very excited and can’t wait to perform with and meet new people interested in what I love the most,” Jones said. “A big thanks to my parents for making this possible and being supportive through the process. And thank you to Sam Van Dielen for getting me where I am today musically.

“I’m very excited and can’t wait to see where this opportunity leads me.”

The Blues will compete at the Drum Corps International Championships held Aug. 6-7 in Indianapolis.

Eli Jones, third from right, auditions earlier this month with the Memphis Blues Drum Corps. Jones is a sophomore at Houston High School.
