A former Houston mayor and city council member passed away Jan. 22 in Bay City, Michigan.

Edwin Goldsmith joined the city council in 1994 and was later elected as the town’s mayor, a position he held from 1995 until 1999.

He was 88.

It was in November 1998 that the city transitioned from a city hall on Main Street to a new home on Oak Street. The structure had previously been a bank.

Goldsmith is a retired civil servant who was involved in managing Fort Leonard Wood’s finances. He also operated a farm at Roby.

Goldsmith relocated to Michigan to be close to his family. Among survivors are a daughter, Lisa.

A private family memorial and burial will be held at a later date. Interment will be at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Plato.
