A man from Licking is charged with child abuse after a Valentine’s Day incident, authorities said.

Travin Pendergraft, born in 2000, is charged with abuse or neglect of a child and domestic assault. Both are class D felonies.

The Texas County Sheriff’s Department was called to a residence Saturday afternoon after a woman alleged that Pendergraft had assaulted her 5-year-old daughter. She said she observed Pendergraft with both of his hands on each side of the child’s cheeks and his hands shaking. Red marks were observed by a deputy on the child’s cheeks and high neck area.

The suspect said he entered the child’s bedroom after hearing crying and became upset after the girl wouldn’t directly look at him. He admitted that the situation may have gone too far, but denied purposely choking the girl.

Bond is set at $3,000 cash only.
