A large fire in the Upton area was brought under control Tuesday night following a response from fire departments throughout south-central Missouri, the Roby Fire Department said.

The blaze was centered near Stallcup and Upton roads and was fought for about six hours.

The fast-moving fire — fueled by dry conditions and high wind — was reported at about 2 p.m. to the Plato Fire Department. Firefighters from Roby quickly mobilized to protect structures and livestock.

Other departments joined Roby and Plato: Houston Rural, Nebo/Falcon, Missouri Department of Conservation, U.S. Forest Service, Mountain Grove, Hartville, Willow Springs, Eleven Point and Raymondville.

The command post estimated that the effort included 60 personnel, 30 pieces of equipment, including dozers; and about 20,000 gallons of water were used. Leaders estimated the incident cost about $15,000.

The Texas County Emergency Response Team brought water and snacks to firefighters.

“We are happy to say that even though this was the largest incident our community has seen in over 10 years when it comes to fire, we saved every house, outbuilding and all the livestock with no injuries or damage to equipment,” according to a statement from the Roby Fire Department. “There were a few times some of the personnel were in a risky situation along with the trucks, but all came out safe.”

Firefighters left the scene at about 8 p.m.

The number of acres involved was not immediately known.
