An after-school reading program has launched at the Houston branch of the Texas County Library in Houston.
In partnership with Houston Elementary School, the library, which opened in October 2025, is seeking mentors for eight enrolled students.
The program helps children build strong reading skills while discovering the joy of books in a welcoming library environment, said Louise Beasley, director.
“Through guided and independent reading, storytelling and discussions, children improve their fluency, comprehension and confidence at their own pace,” said Beasley, who outlined the program during Wednesday meetings of the Texas County Library Foundation and Texas County Library Board.
It also is hopes that the program helps families connect with library resources and fosters positive relations with library staff.
Persons who would like to become a Texas County Library mentor can contact Beasley at 417-967-2258 and visit the library at 191 N. First St. The program days are 3:15 until 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
