The Cabool City Council heard from residents along Dogwood and Sunshine streets at its regular monthly meeting on May 18.

Allen Primanzon asked the council what kind of progress is being made on the streets within the subdivision.

“It’s not officially a street,” explained Ron Scheets, city administrator. “We should’ve made [the developer] do the street first.”

Scheets said streets are required to have curbs and gutters and to be brought to grade before the city can adopt them. Typically, subdivision streets are done before lots are sold and homes built, but that didn’t happen in this case, he said.

James Wyatt, also a resident of the subdivision, reiterated concerns. All agreed there are “a lot of questions that still need asked” about the situation.

“We’re trying,” said Scheets.

Other matters

  • School resource officer Shane Wallace asked the council for approval of a new agreement with the school. Previously, the city had paid part of the officer’s salary. The new agreement would move Wallace to a full-time school employee with salary and benefits. The police department would still provide uniforms, a duty firearm and a patrol vehicle. Scheets explained the vehicle is an older patrol vehicle and not a take-home car. He also said Wallace will remain a reserve officer within the city, but not on payroll.
  • Members approved dates for Flash Fireworks to be open, with the business planning to sell fireworks from its location on Ozark Avenue from June 28 to July 5.
  • He said there will be several events in the community to celebrate the 250th birthday of America on July 4, including a block party and fireworks. The city also purchased special flags to be flown throughout town. Mayor John Mark Hale said the high school football field will be painted to commemorate the occasion as well.
  • Scheets also asked council if they’d had a chance to review the job descriptions he submitted last month. The descriptions tie into a project to complete job descriptions and a pay scale for city employees. Council members asked a few questions for clarification and approved the descriptions unanimously.

The council will have a budget work session at 5 p.m. Monday, June 1, and the next regular meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 22.
