Installation of new officers of the Houston Lions Club was held: Elmer Murfin, president; Coy Haggard, first vice president; Raymond Duff, second vice president; Kenneth B. Ross, third vice president; H.A. Coats, lion tamer; and Nolan Akins, tail twister.
A pre-July 4 fireworks display took place at the A.J. Haney Market. About $100 worth of fireworks, on sale at the Haney store. It was not learned what caused the explosion. Nobody was hurt.
Gilbert Elmore resigned as secretary of the Houston Chamber of Commerce, explaining that he had accepted a position at Fort Leonard Wood. Richard H. Ichord was named to fill the vacancy.
Earl Sponsler announced that he was retiring as chairman of the Texas County Democrat Party.
The new Texas County Memorial Hospital was 80 percent completed.
P.J. Roser, 85, made a trip to Maryland via airplane. It was his first time to go up in a plane. He said he enjoyed it and thought it was the “best way to travel.”
Several area residents have reported seeing roadrunners. The closest to Houston was Hartville. And bear stories are being circulated with black bears being sighted in Laclede and Dent counties.
