A teenager sent to prison for her role in the brutal death of another teen last year has an attorney as she attempts to set aside her conviction.

Stuart P. Huffman of Springfield entered an appearance last week for Isis K. Schauer, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Dec. 19 and is serving the term at a state women’s prison in Vandalia. Schauer was charged — along with three others — in the death of Joseph Steinfeld, 17, who relatives said was transgender and went by the name of Ally. The crime occurred northeast of Cabool.

Schauer entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder and abandonment of a corpse and received the sentence before Circuit Judge John Beger. Two others — Andrew Vrba, 18, and Brianna Calderas, 24 — are also charged in the murder. A fourth person, James Grigsby, of Thayer, 25, is accused of abandonment of a corpse and tampering with evidence. Calderas’ case is set for a review today (Tuesday, June 19)

Schauer claims she had ineffective counsel from Paul McMahon of the state’s public defender office and her plea was not voluntary or knowledgeable.
