Ryan and Amanda Munson, of Houston, wave to passersby in April 2017 as part of the annual Carry The Cross. The effort, which began in Texas County in 2012, mobilizes the community to hold life-size crosses along U.S. 63 on Good Friday.

An effort that unites hundreds of believers each year in Texas County is under way this morning.

‘Carry The Cross’ calls for area Christians to stand alongside U.S. 63 on Good Friday as witnesses for Christ. Nearly 1,2000 people participated last year as life-size crosses covered nearly every quarter-mile from west of Cabool to the Texas County line north of Licking.

“This is a day our county looks forward to every year,” said Jeff McNiell, regional coordinator. “It’s one of the most powerful, united efforts I’ve ever seen – and it’s for such an important cause.”

Participants in Texas County joined other Christians across the state as they stand with 10-foot crosses from 7-11 a.m. Friday, March 30. The crosses, made of PVC pipe, will be provided to those who participate. Locations are assigned by McNiell, who is a member of the Houston Ministerial Alliance.

“Our goal is to make this as easy as possible for everyone,” McNiell said. “The crosses are paid for, so there is no cost involved. And someone will drop the cross off at your location, then pick it up later. What we’re seeking are people who will hold the cross as a witness for Jesus for four hours that day.”

The morning kicked off with a 6 a.m. Good Friday with a rally inside Hiett Gymnasium. It included worship, instructions for the day, group photo and a brief message.

“Many people may not feel like they can speak from a stage, sing or even answer questions about their faith. But we can all hold a cross,” McNiell said. “We obey the command to witness and trust the Holy Spirit moves in the hearts of those who see the crosses. We’ve seen it happen in past years and expect God will move in the same way this year.”

Carry The Cross is the fulfillment of a vision placed in the heart of Pastor David Craig of Sikeston. He met McNiell early in 2012, and the effort in Texas County began that April with about 50 people holding 22 crosses.
