An almost $1.8 million Houston Industrial Development Authority project to construct a 40,000 square foot building at the Houston Northeast Industrial Park will begin soon, the Houston City Council heard Wednesday.
Thanks to a nearly $1.04 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration announced in September 2015, the project will be configured for an unnamed industry prospect that would create 45 jobs within nine years, according to grant documents. The local economic organization will contribute about $700,000.
The building will be constructed on a five-acre tract — recently acquired by the City of Houston from the Houston Development Co. and east of the Houston Area Chamber of Fairgrounds on North U.S. 63. Water and sewer service was extended to the property earlier. Â
City Administrator Tona Bowen said a kickoff meeting is planned Monday afternoon with Archer Engineering of Rolla, the South Central Council of Governments (which will administer the grant project), the federal Economic Development Administration, City of Houston and Houston Industrial Development Authority.
No firm timetable has been established for the project. A lease has not yet been signed for the building, which will sit on the northwest portion of the industrial park.
