Richard Leo Nelson, 70, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, at Mountain View Health Care.
He was born Sept. 2, 1946, in Summersville, son of Leo and Stella Mae Plowman Nelson. He loved God, his family and friends. He was a member of the American Legion, Shriners, Summersville Masonic Lodge AF&AM 5555 and the Summersville Fire Department.
Richard was an Air Force veteran, serving from 1963-’65. He trained in Amarillo, Texas, and was stationed in Dover, Del.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing bingo and visiting with family and friends. He loved sitting outside watching wildlife and CB radios. His handle was “cab driver.”
He accepted Christ and was baptized as a young man.
He worked many different jobs, including taxi driver, mail trucker driver, clerk and seed nursery and Hussman Manufacturing until he became disabled.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Christopher Nelson; and a brother Lester Nelson, and nephew Vernon.
Survivors include a son, Timothy Keyes; four daughters, Melissa Corey, Linda Nelson, Rebecca Nelson and Megan Nelson; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four brothers, Ralph, Harry, Ronald and Raymon; two sisters, Sandra and Brenda; a special friend, Pat; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at a later date. Cremation was under the care of Bradford Funeral Home.
