To the editor:

On May 2, I attended the third grade musical program at Houston Elementary, and as always, was thoroughly entertained by our young citizens. This program was about your hero and people in the world that have made an impact upon the world. There was Daniel Boone, Albert Einstein, Annie Oakley and you couldn’t miss Jackie Kennedy and Lucille Ball, to name a few! The third graders performed superbly, and it was a good hour spent! Kudos to the third graders and their parents, as they surely were involved in those awesome customes.

I am amazed at how the teachers seem to have these little bundles of energy under control!

At the end of a delightful program that includes a bit of a history lesson; as the children explained who they were and what deeds their hero was responsible for in history, they sang several songs with choreography and several solos, and the announcement of Mrs. Jodie Forbes’ retirement was made. I am saddened for the loss of such an awesome teacher for the children.

From the first kindergarten circus, I have been amazed at Mrs. Forbes’ ability to get the attention of so many children and the performances are excellent, reflecting much rehearsal and the children do such an awesome job! Mrs. Forbes has a special karma with her ability to connect with these youngsters and is able to get their attention and they respond to her by giving their best! She has a special rapport that is very rate and just a gift! I enjoy watching her with the kids, it is evident she has connected with them and they with her!

This program was a bit of history but it also included a very powerful message I thought, the children sang songs pertaining to being positive, that we all are different but that is okay, to have a positive self-esteem of oneself and that with that and a bit of hard work and a can-do spirit and education that anyone could accomplish anything if they just set their mind to it!

Wow! What a wonderful but powerful message!

A couple weeks ago, Mrs. Forbes stopped in our greenhouse and we got to visiting. I attempted to tell her how I am amazed how she is able to get so many kids attention and the performances were just awesome! She humbly deflected my praise to comment on how great the other teachers were and the kids. Houston Schools has a big hole to fill in the faculty with the loss of such a gifted and talented teacher!

Mrs. Forbes, you have a gift with these kids, thank you for your time and dedication to our children. I wish you well with your new phase of life but for such a small humble lady you sure have left a big footprint!

SINCERELY, KATHY WILSON, HOUSTON
