Military veteran

Vearn (Vernon) Carter, 82, son of Oscar William and Leah (Snyder) Carter, was born Jan. 16, 1934, at Upton, Mo. He passed away on Jan. 2, 2017, at the Veteran’s Hospital in Columbia, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife ,Freda (McKee) Carter; his brothers, Wesley, Harvey, Wiliford, Marshall and Kenneth; his sisters, Velma Tollefson and Hazel Postlewait; and a daughter-n-law, Coleen Carter.

He is survived by his wife, Leila (Hart) Carter of Houston, Mo.; his sister, Ruby Ramsey of Success, Mo.; and his six sons, Oscar Carter and wife, Faith, of Eldon, Mo., David Carter and wife, Tanya, of Bucyrus, Mo., Steve Carter and wife, Teresa, of Slater, Mo., Randy Carter and wife, Katy, of West Plains, Mo., Harvey Carter of Salem, Mo., and Gary Carter of New Haven, Mo. In addition, he is survived by his stepchildren, Connie Shaw of Riverside, Iowa, and Mike Sullivan of Rogersville, Mo. He also leaves behind several grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

Vearn loved nature and enjoyed hunting and fishing the Ozark lakes and streams around Houston, Mo. He served in both the United States Army and Air Force. He was a Korean War veteran.

He was a professional logger for most of his working life and used the mechanical training he had learned from the military to do his own repairs of the heavy equipment that he loved to operate.

Vearn was a great neighbor who was always ready to help those in need. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be sorely missed by all.

The family is hosting a celebration of Vearn’s life at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, at Faith Fellowship with Pastor Bill Villapiano officiating. The family requests to dress in casual attire as that is what Vearn would want. Cremation was under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
