Work on a new $963,000 city well and water tower will begin soon at an industrial park off West Highway 17, the Houston City Council heard Monday night.

Council members approved three bids for the work, which will first include drilling the well in an area north of Opportunity Sheltered Industries. Out of the total cost, the city’s share is about $244,000. The rest is paid through the Delta Regional Authority, an organization whose mission is to economically improve the Mississippi Delta region; and funds through the Community Development Block Grant program.

White River Engineering of Springfield is the engineering firm on the project. The council agreed to reimburse the firm for nearly $1,900 in surveying fees. A principal in the firm, Richard McMillian, attended the meeting.  Additional costs billed to the city will be reviewed at the end of the contract period, said City Administrator Larry Sutton.

Work could be completed as early as late fall.
