Thelma Barton Lowry, 93, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at her home in Bridgeton.

She was born Aug. 16, 1920, in Americus, daugher of Oscar and Ruth Barton. She and James Lory were married in October 1984.

She grew up in Summersville and graduated from high school there in 1938. She graduated from, Washington University in 1954 and later earned her master’s degree from the University of Missouri at St. Louis (UMSL).

She taught school for 33 three years, most of the time in third grade at Washington School in the Normandy School District.

She was active in Trinity Tabernacle Church (now called BridgeWay Church), the Gideon ministry and the Bridgeton Community Helping ministry.

Survivors include two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three stepchildren, Cathie Lanier, Elizabeth “Beth” Lowry and Ralph Lowry.

Services were Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Summersville Methodist Church with Pastor Richard Stamey officiating. Burial was in Summersville City Cemetery under the direction of Bradford Funeral Home.
