James C. “Jake” Davis, 88, died Monday, July 15, 2013, in Poplar Bluff.
He was born Sept. 11, 1924, in Avant, Okla., son of Clarence and Mary Reese Davis. He married Donna Walker.
He became a Christian in his early 20s. He attended church and filled in as pastor of Oakside Church as needed in his early years. He was also a member of the VFW.
He served in the Army during World War II as first scout in an infantry division. His tour of duty included combat in France, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart and other medals, including the Bronze Star.
He was avid traveler all his life. He and his wife, Donna, spent many hours on the road pulling their camper and visiting places across the country. A pastime in later years was making close to 50 fiddles. He was a musician and enjoyed playing the guitar.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mabel Roney and Hazel Ellis; and an infant brother.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Donna; three sons, Steve and Terry of Mountain View and Joe of Summersville; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Gene of Mountain View; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were Thursday, July 18, in Oakside Cemetery with the Rev. Emmett Bradford officiating. Services were under the direction of Bradford Funeral Home.
