Alva Skyles Jr., 77, son of Alva Monroe and Pearl Butts Skyles, was born Sept. 18, 1924, near Cabool. He died Aug. 29, 2002, following a short illness. He grew up and lived most of his life in Texas County. When he was 8, he decided to begin his training as a bull rider in the rodeo. He caught a calf, determined to ride it. The calf, already trained to do its part, threw Junior onto a rock. The next morning he couldn’t walk and laid in bed several months. As a result, his leg was removed, and he spent the rest of his life with an ar-ificial leg. He married Norma Jean Moyer June 9, 1956. They had one daughter. Mr. Skyles was a farmer, fence builder and woodsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the compan-ionship of his two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters and one brother. Surviving are his wife of the home; his daughter, Priscilla Norean Skyles Williams of Yates, Guernsey; one sister, Opal Altis of Cabool; two brothers, Richard Skyles of Marshfield and Robert Skyles of Kentucky; and two grand-daughters. Services were Aug. 31 at the Elliott-Gentry Funeral Home in Cabool with Eldon Coffman officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. “
