Betty Jane Mitchell, 78, daughter of Orland Jack Ross and Leoma Morgan Ross, was born Aug. 29, 1924, at Houston. She died Sept. 24, 2002, at her home in Houston. She was a 1942 graduate of Houston High School and married Ivan Leslie Mitchell June 17, 1942, at Houston. Except for four years of her life, she lived in Houston. While her husband was in the U.S. Army Air Corps, she accompanied him to Lincoln, Neb., and Tucson, Ariz., where he was stationed. After returning to Houston, the Mitchells established and operated Mitchell Insurance Agency for 37 years. Mrs. Mitchell was a 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a member of the Rebekah Lodge and a volunteer for many years with the Texas County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She accepted Christ as Savior at age 13 in 1937 and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Houston. She was preceded in death by her husband June 26, 1989, after 47 years of marriage; her parents; two brothers, James Lee and Donald Morgan; and one sister, Dorothy Sue. Surviving are two sons, Bradley Steven Mitchell of Houston and Michael Brent Mitchell of Overland Park, Kan.; one sister, Ruth Mae Wilson of Arkansas City, Kan.; one brother, Eugene Ross of Houston; and four grandchildren. Services were Sept. 27 at the First Baptist Church in Houston with the Rev. Benny Gard and Jeff Moore officiating. Burial was in the Pine Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home. “
